Professor V's Teaching Cafe

Teachers and Students Collaborating Worldwide

Like many others, my favorite aspect of this chapter was the tips for new teachers. These tips spanned aspects from journaling, classroom behavior, creative experiences, and the school environment itself. The text stressed that journaling was an important way to record first-year experiences. I  am sure that year will be quite hectic and it will be nice to have a concrete reminder of how far we have come down the road. In addition, it is important to remember that teaching is not about the teacher, it is about the student. The focus needs to always be on the students and what we can do for them. It is also important to plan creative activities for children so that it engages them in learning in a variety of ways. This will help us reach students with multiple intelligences and learning styles. It is also important to find a mentor who knows what that first year teaching is like. They will be an invaluable support system from whom there is so much to learn. Finally, it is important to learn about the school where you will be teaching. Teachers need to acquaint themselves with the culture of the school. This includes finding out information about the school's community involvement, leadership style, size, diversity, and any other aspects of school.

Hey Jordan,

I really enjoyed your post. I think you summarized the key points very well in that section of tips for new teachers. I agree particularly with the importance of journaling in our first few years. By documenting our experiences in our own words, it gives us a great tool to reflect on later in our careers. Great post!

My favorite section of Chapter 10 was also the tips for new teachers.  I think all of the tips were very well thought out and very beneficial to future teachers.  I don't know about you, but I plan on using most, if not all, of those tips once I become a teacher.  I have talked to teachers about keeping a journal and many of them have said that they keep one and it is very beneficial.  I think keeping a journal would be a great way to keep stress levels down and be able to reflect in a private setting.

Good post! Good luck in all of your future classes.

Hi Jordan!

You're post is great. I really enjoyed the tips for new teachers too. I would also include, (even though is was mentioned a bit in the last few chapters) that how important it is for us as teachers to take an advantage of technology. Especially when it comes to making sure that we teach out students on many ways with it so that it covers all the different learning styles so that every students has a chance to learn.
